What is Malnutrition?
Malnutrition is a physical condition that occurs when the body is not getting enough calories and other nutrients to keep it healthy. This might happen if we stop eating properly, or if our body needs more nutrients than normal (e.g. if we have an infection). Poor nutrition can have adverse affects on the body’s ability to stay healthy and fight infection.
Malnutrition is a serious problem which affects over three million people in the UK at any given point in time.1
Whilst anyone can become malnourished, those most at risk of malnutrition are:
- elderly people
- those who are housebound and find it difficult to prepare food
- those with certain medical conditions
Malnutrition can affect both physical and mental health and can slow recovery from illness. However, if recognised, malnutrition can be treated.

When it comes to feeding your baby, breast milk is best and provides many benefits. It is recommended for as long as possible during infancy. If you choose to breastfeed, it is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse, and combined breast and bottle feeding may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk.
If you are thinking about bottle feeding, please seek advice from a healthcare professional, and consider the social and financial implications of using an infant milk. If you do choose to use an infant formula, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use very carefully, as failure to do so could make your baby ill.
