How do I care for my pump?

How do I care for my pump

It is important to keep your feeding pump as clean as possible:

  • Unplug your pump when you are cleaning it
  • Clean your pump every day, after feeding and immediately after any spills
  • Use a damp cloth – you shouldn’t need any cleaning agents. However, you can try using warm water and a mild detergent on any feed stains that won’t come off with water alone.
  • Never immerse the pump in water
  • If you have a ClearStar pump, take it out of its outer case and clean it once a week

For more advice about cleaning your pump, read the relevant ‘Guide to setting up…’ booklet that your healthcare professional should have given you.

When it comes to feeding your baby, breast milk is best and provides many benefits. It is recommended for as long as possible during infancy. If you choose to breastfeed, it is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse, and combined breast and bottle feeding may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk.

If you are thinking about bottle feeding, please seek advice from a healthcare professional, and consider the social and financial implications of using an infant milk. If you do choose to use an infant formula, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use very carefully, as failure to do so could make your baby ill.
