What are tube feeds?

Tube feeds are types of liquid nutrition used by adults and children who cannot take in enough daily calories from food and/or nutritional drinks by mouth. For example, you may have swallowing difficulties, or your medical condition may require that you need some extra help with nutrition.

Tube feeding involves the delivery of a nutritionally complete liquid feed directly into the stomach or small bowel via a narrow tube1. The narrow tube is placed into the stomach or small bowel either through the nose (nasogastric or nasojejunal feeding tube), straight into the stomach (gastrostomy feeding tube) or into the small bowel (jejunostomy feeding tube).

What is a nasogastric/nasojejunal tube?
A nasogastric tube is a narrow tube that is placed through your nose and goes down into the stomach or small bowel to give you the food, water and medicines that you need.

What is a gastrostomy tube?
A gastrostomy tube is a narrow tube that is placed directly into the stomach to give you the food, water and medicines that you need.

What is a jejunostomy tube?
A jejunostomy tube is a narrow tube that is placed directly into the small bowel to give you the food, water and medicines that you need.

Tube feeding is usually started in hospital. Once you leave hospital, you or your carer will be trained on how to manage your or your child’s feed at home.

Abbott Nutrition provides a range of tube feeds to meet your or your child’s nutritional needs both in the hospital and at home.

Since everyone’s nutritional needs are different, your healthcare professional will be able to advise you on which tube feed product is right for you or your child.

In addition Abbott Nutrition has tube feeds to meet the nutritional needs of children. There is also a range of specialist feeds designed for people who have specific dietary requirements because of particular medical conditions. Specialist and modular feeds page

When it comes to feeding your baby, breast milk is best and provides many benefits. It is recommended for as long as possible during infancy. If you choose to breastfeed, it is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse, and combined breast and bottle feeding may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk.

If you are thinking about bottle feeding, please seek advice from a healthcare professional, and consider the social and financial implications of using an infant milk. If you do choose to use an infant formula, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use very carefully, as failure to do so could make your baby ill.
