Older child and adult feeds

Abbott Nutrition provides a range of feeds to meet your or your child’s nutritional needs both in the hospital and at home.

NUTRITIONAL DRINKS are taken by older children and adults who cannot take in all of the calories they need each day from food alone*. However, it is important to remember that nutritional drinks are usually used to add to your daily dietary intake, not replace it.

We have drinks in our range designed for older children and adults, including:

  • Ensure Plus milkshake, yoghurt and savoury styles
  • Ensure Plus juce, a juice style drink
  • Ensure Plus fibre, a milkshake-style drink, with added fibre and fructo-oligosaccharides (a prebiotic)
  • Enshake, a high-calorie shake drink which is mixed with milk for even more calories
  • Ensure TwoCal, a very high calorie and protein milkshake style drink with fructo-oligosaccharides (a prebiotic)
  • Ensure Plus Crème, a high calorie dessert

Starter Packs
A great way of starting on our range of nutritional drinks is to try the different flavours. You can then see which flavours you or your child prefer. This is easy to do by using our starter pack for Ensure Plus. The starter pack, which needs to be prescribed by your or your child’s healthcare professional, contains ten bottles of Ensure Plus in a range of flavours.

Tip
Most of our nutritional drinks are best served chilled and can also be used in recipes. Chocolate and coffee flavours are also great served warm (do not allow the drink to boil as this may affect some of the ingredients).

TUBE FEEDS are types of liquid nutrition used by older children and adults who cannot take in enough daily calories and nutrients from food and/or nutritional drinks*. For example, you or your child may have swallowing difficulties, or a medical condition that may require extra help with nutrition. Tube feeding involves the delivery of a nutritionally complete liquid feed directly into the stomach or small bowel via a narrow tube. Tube feeding is usually started in hospital. Once you or your child leaves hospital, you or your carer will be trained on how to manage feeding at home. Since everyone’s nutritional needs are different, your healthcare professional will be able to advise you on which tube feed product is right for you or your child.

There is also a range of specialist feeds designed for people who have specific dietary requirements because of particular medical conditions.

If you have any questions about our nutritional drinks and tube feeds, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section or call our Freephone Nutrition Helpline on 0800 252 882 (during office hours).

*Younger children (weighing 8-30kg) have different nutritional needs to adults, so our PaediaSure range is designed specifically to meet their needs for calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. Click here to find out more.

When it comes to feeding your baby, breast milk is best and provides many benefits. It is recommended for as long as possible during infancy. If you choose to breastfeed, it is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse, and combined breast and bottle feeding may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk.

If you are thinking about bottle feeding, please seek advice from a healthcare professional, and consider the social and financial implications of using an infant milk. If you do choose to use an infant formula, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use very carefully, as failure to do so could make your baby ill.
