Education program launched to tackle malnutrition in the care sector

27 October 2009
Age Concern and Help the Aged, supported by an educational grant from Abbott Nutrition, has launched a series of 1-day training courses to educate care staff on malnutrition awareness for older people, to help tackle the growing problem.

Malnutrition is an under-recognised and under-treated problem facing the UK. Approximately 1.3 million individuals aged 65 years and over in the UK are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition1, affecting almost 1 in 3 adults admitted to care homes2. The problem for older people is compounded by dementia which can also have a profound effect on an individuals nutritional status.

Age Concern and Help the Aged have been delivering nutrition training for a number of years and recognised in light of the growing number of older people living with dementia, combined with the recent report3 calling for action in tackling malnutrition, that there was a need for a tailored education program for older people looked after in both community care and nursing homes. The programme will run until March 2010 educating approximately 320 operational and managerial staff in care homes and day centres who are responsible for nutrition and well being, as well as care workers who are involved with supported feeding. Key learning objectives include being able to identify and assess malnutrition, and have the ability to provide solutions.

When it comes to feeding your baby, breast milk is best and provides many benefits. It is recommended for as long as possible during infancy. If you choose to breastfeed, it is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse, and combined breast and bottle feeding may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk.

If you are thinking about bottle feeding, please seek advice from a healthcare professional, and consider the social and financial implications of using an infant milk. If you do choose to use an infant formula, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use very carefully, as failure to do so could make your baby ill.
